Joseph Robineau and Eleonore Robineau (Farmer)

Joseph Robineau was baptized on March 8, 1804.  According to the church record Joseph’s parents were Louis Robineau and Marguerite Bigras who were married in 1799 at Oka (L’Annonciation-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie).  Joseph died in 1855.

Eleonore Farmer was baptized on August 26, 1814. According to church records Eleonore’s parents were Andre Farmer and Marie Marguerite Cleroux.  Eleonore died in 1903.

Joseph Robineau and Eleonore Phalmeur were married on February 20, 1832.  They were married in St. Benoit parish.  Saint-Benoît, Quebec was a municipality in Quebec until its amalgamation with neighbouring towns in 1971 to form the town of Sainte-Scholastique, which was renamed Mirabel in 1973.

When I started in genealogy around 2010, there was considerable mis-spelling   of Eleonore’s name.  Many assumed it was Falmar or Phalmeur.  Evidence now supports the name “Farmer”.  In fact, there is evidence that Eleonore’s father may have come from Virginia.

The “1852 census of Canada – East” lists six Robineau’s in the household (Emelie, Olivine, Joseph, Marguerite, Frederique and Aurelie).  Artimise and Joseph died before 1852 and Damase was born after 1852.  According to the 1852 census, they lived in Ste. Marthe in Vaudreuil county. They are also in this location in the 1861 census.

Joseph and Eleonore’s children included:

  • Olivine, baptized in 1844
  • Joseph baptized in 1846
    • Joseph was married to Marie Portelance in February 1871 in Ripon, Quebec.
  • Marie Marguerite baptized in 1842
  • Joseph Robineau baptized in 1836 – died in 1837
  • Artimise Pricille baptized in 1838 – died in 1839
  • Emelie Onezime baptized in 1835
  • Aurelie baptised in 1833
    • Married John Hughes in Ste. Marthe in 1857
  • Frederique baptized in 1848
    • Married  Delphine Parent in 1869 in Ripon, Quebec
  • Damase Robineau baptised on August 1, 1854
    • Damase was married to Marie Riopel in January 1875 in Ripon,Quebec.

Joseph Robineau, Eleonore’s husband died in 1855.  Unsupported sources indicate that Eleonore was destitute after Joseph’s death. Apparently Joseph had a lumber business with his in-laws and when that business failed they lost all their wealth. Eleonore was helped in the raising of her children by Joseph Brunet who she eventually married in 1859.

There appears to have been a migration of the Robineau’s to Ripon Quebec in the 1860’s.

That migration pattern continued in the early 1900’s when Damase and his family moved to Sturgeon Falls.
